This is for the “BuT We hAvE To kEeP ThE LiNeS Of cOmMuNiCaTiOn oPeN” folks
If you have an e-mail account, do you:
- thank the tech gods for filters
- let all of the spam through because you think scammers have a right to contact you - write back because you think they might have something legitimate to offer - respond in the hopes that they will teach you how to be a Nigerian Prince too
- forward the message to your friends
Now, take the above example and substitute the way you think about e-mail as your attention, and spam is racist / homophobic / sexist / fascist rhetoric.
If you don’t think a spammer is worthy of consideration, then why would you give someone who you already know you disagree with on fundamental human rights the opportunity to draw you in?
Sure, you may even have some things in common with the person sending spam (like wanting to make a living), but that still isn’t a good enough reason to listen to them if you already know you disagree with their morals (scamming people).
